John Evans for The Kansas City Star

I often find one of the biggest challenges of freelance work is portrait locations. In this case, I was assigned to photograph John Evans for the Kansas City Star. Evans is a local musician but the story is about John's new narrative podcast. The feature requires portraits for style purposes. Not wanting to make a stagey environmental portrait in his makeshift home studio, we opted for the serene minimal setting of the modern Bloch wing of the Nelson Atkins museum.

I read the post about John Evans for The Kansas City Star, and it gave a peek into how a photographer works on assignment, captures real moments, and tells stories through images from everyday life in the city, which felt interesting and human. Last semester when my coursework got really heavy, I used online chemistry class help during a crazy stretch so I could keep up with other work and still enjoy creative things like photography. It made me think that finding balance helps you keep learning and exploring.
