Fair Meadows is not like the Kentucky Derby. There are no mint juleps here. I didn’t see any seersucker or white shoes. Instead, I saw pearl snap shirts, boots and cowboy hats. There was definitely an Oklahoma touch to the atmosphere. There is an undeniable beauty in the strength and speed of the horses, and there is no denying the excitement and suspense of the outcome. When the gates swing open and the horses spring forward, it’s just as exciting as the Belmont Stakes. And on a unseasonably cool July evening, there was no place better to be.
